Who Are You?

For several years now the Kendrick brothers out of Georgia have been producing family-friendly Christian-inspired movies. They have included titles like ‘Facing the Giants”, “Courageous”, and “War Room”. Last year they came out with their latest release entitled “Overcomer”. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.

I won’t give away the plot and story but the spiritual lesson of the movie is based on the question of “Who are you?”. What is your identity? When you meet someone for the first time and they ask you to tell them about yourself, what do you say?

We are often quick to tell about our career, title, how many kids we have, where we are from, or who we are married to. We might finally get to our Christianity. Typically, Jesus is not first on our list of things to brag about. Our answer to this question is very telling of our thought process. For most of us, our minds are not fixed on the eternal. It is fixed on the things of this world.

When we give our lives to Christ, we are a new creature. He makes us brand new. He hits the reset button for us. God no longer sees us as a hopeless sinner separated from Him. We are now a child of His. We are adopted into His family and should no longer consider ourselves as a part of this world.

“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;” Ephesians 2:1

If you are a child of God’s, you were once dead in sin. You were a hopeless case. You were destined for hell. But God, revived you. He raised you up. That’s what the word ‘quickened’ means in the verse above.

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” Ephesians 2:4-6

“But God”. What a wonderful two word phrase. These two simple words represent God providing us the opportunity for our lives to receive a 180 degree turn around. Notice it says “But GOD“. Not “But David” or “But Anybody”. It’s all about God and what He did.

In God I am no longer a failure. I am no longer seen as a child of disobedience. I am a child of the King! I am an heir to a heavenly home. I am His.
